RELIGION
Areas of study include: An in-depth assessment of the Seven Sacraments, traditions of the Catholic Church, the importance of the celebration of Mass and the Eucharist. Students also participate in community service programs sponsored by the school.
READING
A balanced literacy approach is achieved through the use of our reading program. Areas of study include: spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, listening skills, summarizing, identifying story elements, making predictions, drawing conclusions, making inferences, identifying the main idea and key details, and cause and effect relationships. Students study various genres of text including: realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, myth, drama, poetry, biography, narrative non-fiction, and expository text.
A variety of teaching methods are implemented during reading instruction, including direct instruction, small/whole group instruction, and guided reading. In addition, multisensory instruction is used as needed.
NOTE: Daily independent reading both at home and in school is a very important part of the total reading program. Reading at home, both independently and aloud, and annotating the texts is greatly encouraged.
WRITING
Through the use of evidence-based approach to writing instruction, students focus on the writing process, drafting, peer conferencing, editing, revising, and publishing. Students utilize quick outlines, summary outlines, transitional outlines, and multiple paragraph outlines to organize their writing prior to drafting paragraphs and essays.
MATH
Units of study include: number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, probability, fractions, decimals, and solving single and multi-step word problems
SCIENCE
Units of study include: astronomy and the solar system, weather and climate, matter and energy, ecosystems and health and nutrition.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Areas of study include: map skills, geography (including oceans, landforms, continents, hemispheres, latitude and longitude), regions of the United States, the history, geography, and culture of Latin America, European explorers, early European settlements and colonization, the struggle for North America (French and Spanish involvement in North America), the American Revolution and the United States government.
