RELIGION
Areas of study include: traditions of the Catholic Church, the values of Faith, Hope and Love, the church hierarchy and the Old Testament. Students actively participate in the religion curriculum through role-play and other hands-on activities.
READING
Through the use of the reading program students are engaged in a balanced literacy approach to reading instruction. The curriculum includes spelling, comprehension, vocabulary development, decoding strategies and listening skills. Students study various genres of text including: realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, myth, drama, poetry, biography, narrative non-fiction, and expository text. The daily reading block includes direct reading instruction, small group/whole group instruction, and guided reading.
NOTE: Daily independent reading both at home and in school is a very important part of the total reading program. Reading at home, both independently and aloud, and annotating the texts is greatly encouraged.
WRITING
Utilizing Basic Writing Skills, an evidence-based approach to writing instruction, students work on organizing ideas to properly structure their writing. Students utilize various outlines from the Writing Method including the quick outline, summary outline, transitional outline, and multiple paragraph outline. Students work on writing a single paragraph and expand their writing to multiple paragraph essays. Students are instructed in various types of expository writing including compare/contrast essays, persuasive writing, and descriptive essays.
MATH
Units of study include: place-value, rounding, fractions, decimals, percent, absolute value, positive and negative integers, ratio, and unit rate
SCIENCE
Units of study include: the diversity of life, rocks and minerals, light and sound, and simple machines.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Areas of study include: foundations of geography, history, and economics, ancient Egypt, ancient civilizations of Africa and China, and civilizations of the eastern hemisphere
