Welcome to the Our Lady of Victory School's very own Raho Library. My name is Jennifer Corlieto and I am very happy to be the school's librarian teacher. I have been a part of the OLV family for the last 8 years. I love the journey I am on with the staff and students here at OLV and it gives me great pleasure to share my passion of reading with the students when they come to the library.
I attended The College of New Rochelle and have my Bachelor's degree in English and my Master's degree in Science for Childhood Education grades 1-6. In my free time, I love to read, write in my journal (I have had a journal since I was 12 years old), spend time with my husband and my little girl (who is also an OLV student!), and take care of my cats, as I am a huge animal lover.
As the library teacher, my goal is to create a fun, safe, positive, and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, passions, and discussions for learning about various authors and books. The library will be a place where students will learn how to find and use resources, become aware of the research process, and grow to love and appreciate literature by navigating through different genres, authors, and books.
Library Objectives:- Students will instill a love of literature and reading for formation as well as for pleasure.
- There will be supported teacher-led student learning and discovery.
- Guidance to lead students to become independent and successful users and sharers, and creators of informational resources.
- Provide instruction and model resources that stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas.
- Will work with peer educators to design learning strategies that meet the needs of individual students while considering the differences in teaching and learning styles, methods, interests, and capacities.

Benefits of reading aloud to your child:
- Helps cultivate active listening skills. This is a very important skill that will help a child’s ability to learn well in group environments and within the family unit. As an active listener, your child will be ready to excel in school and in the world as a professional.
- Improves visual memory. This is a wonderful way for children to develop vivid imaginations which also helps develop visualization in the mind. With the overuse of electronic devices, many children have lost the ability to think for themselves and their imaginations are not as vivid as they once were. Reading aloud to your children helps to cultivate the invaluable resource of imaginative thinking!
- Gives our children a head start on language skills. Children who are read to on a daily basis are more likely to develop strong language skills and early cognitive skills.
- Helps develop strong literacy skills. According to the National Research Council, studies show that children who are read to often perform better in reading and writing in our public schools.
- Sets our children up for future academic success. A study done by the National Research Council showed that there is considerable evidence of a relationship between reading regularly to a child and their future academic achievement in every area of the school (National Research Council, 2009).
- Improves your child’s overall confidence. Because you are bonding with your child when reading to them, this gives them better overall confidence because they are secure in their relationship with you. In addition to your child feeling safe and connected to you, they also gain great confidence in reading aloud themselves.
- Can help reduce screen time. When children are read to on a daily basis they are less likely to choose to be on an electronic device, therefore reducing overall screen time.
- Will likely become avid readers. Children who are read to on a daily basis are more likely to pick up the habit of reading than those who are not read to.
While no two children are alike, the reasons above have been cited in various studies to have had these effects on children who were read to regardless of their socioeconomic demographic. So one thing is very clear – reading aloud to our children every day is beneficial. -
