The Importance of Art, Music, & Physical Education
At OLV, we challenge our students to explore their God-given talents through art, music, and physical education classes. We understand that our students excel in many ways, and we work hard to create a school culture where each student feels valued and rewarded for their unique gifts.
Art Develops Critical Thinking & Creativity
Art education at the elementary level affects student growth and development both physically and educationally. Motion required in art classes, including holding pencils and crayons or using a paintbrush, supports motor skills development. Decision-making and visual learning skills are also supported for young students as they use creativity and critical thinking skills to design their own art projects. Drawing and painting activities support visual-spatial skills.
Music Supports Math & Language Development
Music education also benefits the mental and social development of the young child. Similar to art education, music helps to develop spatial intelligence, particularly spatial-temporal skills. This allows students to visualize how elements fit together, in turn solving math problems. Music education is also found to support the development of the left side of the brain, which processes language development. With weekly classes, students sing and play instruments, as well as learn about the structure and value of music in culture and in communities.
Developing Social & Emotional Wellness in Physical Education
In physical education classes, students learn the importance of nutrition and staying active throughout their whole lives. In addition to the health benefits of physical education, there are also educational, psychological and emotional benefits to its inclusion at the elementary level. Physical activity also increases self-discipline, judgment, goal-setting skills and sportsmanship. Students fine tune their motor skills and coordination and work on gross motor skills. The inclusion of physical education in the school day helps students strengthen relationships with their peers, reduces stress, as well as improves self-confidence and self-esteem.
